Reverend John R. Schilling, III

January 9, 1937 – December 2, 2023


Reverend Schilling entered God’s eternal kingdom peacefully December 2nd. He is predeceased by his wife, Grace I. Schilling (nee Heintzelman), his parents, John R and Emma H. Schilling (Nee Moyer), his brother Jerome T. Shilling (Jane) and his sister Janet E. Wickersham (Gary). He is survived by his children, Mary Short (Daniel), Margaret Shemeluk (John), and John R. Schilling IV (Rebecca Merlino). He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews, close family friends and his most faithful canine companion Susie.
Born in the Fountain Hill Section of Bethlehem, PA, John graduated from Fountain Hill High School in 1954. He graduated from Muhlenberg College in 1958 with a degree in Sociology and Theology and went on to study and graduate from The Lutheran Theological Seminary of Philadelphia in the Mount Airy section of Germantown, PA. He was ordained May 28, 1961 at St. John’s Overbook Lutheran Church in Philadelphia, PA.
Reverend Schilling was the long time Pastor of St. John’s Tinicum Memorial Lutheran Church in Essington, PA from 1974 until his retirement. Prior to then, he was pastor at Old Goshenhoppen Lutheran Church in Woxall, PA and Zion’s & St John’s Reed’s Lutheran Church in Womelsdorf, PA.
He was a founding member of the Goshenhoppen Historians, a Charter Member and past President of the White Ironstone China Association and a life member and previous Chaplain of the Essington Fire Company. Reverend Schilling was also a member of the Tinicum Township Historical Society and was an integral part of the Chaplain program at Taylor Hospital.
John was a avid antiques collector, clock maker, woodworker and organ builder. He knew something about everything and he loved to tinker. If he couldn’t be found in his garage or in the back alley he was probably at the beach in Ocean City, NJ where he maintained a summer home since 1978.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 14th, from 6 to 8 pm at Griffith Funeral Chapel, Norwood Pa. Funeral Services will be held at St. John’s Tinicum Lutheran Memorial Church in Essington, PA on Friday December 15th at 11am. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Delaware County Humane Society at 415 S 2nd Street, Darby PA 19023
