Obituary

Marian R. Medendorp, lifelong resident of Essington, PA., passed away February 10, 2023

Marian was a lifelong resident of Essington, born in the family home on Bartram Avenue to Fred and Elsie (nee Creelman) Renshaw. She grew up with her brother Albert and sister Gladys(Settimio).  Marian grew up with a large extended family of cousins and relatives from her father’s side. She attended and graduated from Ridley High School.  Marian initially met her husband-to-be, Johnny, in 1944 when Johnny would stay with a fellow service member living in Essington during his brief leaves from training as a Marine.  Marian and Johnny married in 1951, later building their own home in Essington.

Throughout her life Marian remained active in the community, serving on the Essington Library Board, and serving as an Elder for Bethany Presbyterian Church of Chester. She also enjoyed traveling with Johnny, especially taking cruises, and driving to her favorite casino, the Showboat.  Growing up Marian learned to play the Hawaiian Guitar and later piano and, in a pinch, played for church as the backup pianist. Her hobbies included various arts and crafts activities, wallpapering, painting and in her younger days going camping and crabbing with the family on their weekend camping getaways.

Marian always enjoyed her careers, working many years at Manley Auto Parts, and later working for Tinicum Township as the administrative secretary, retiring with 38 years of service in 2013.

Marian is survived by her son John (Jack) and Laurie (Hope) Medendorp and son Scott and Wendy (Stamp) Medendorp, “Mom Mom” to John (Jake) and Melanie (Henderson) Medendorp, Kellie Medendorp, Bethany (Medendorp) and David Hallinan, Shae-Lynn Medendorp, Sara Medendorp, and Scott Medendorp, and great-grandmother to Elisabeth (Libby), Johnny, Abigail (Abby), and Claire and “Nanny” to her nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to Marian’s Funeral Service on Thursday, February 16th at Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, Norwood, PA. Visitation will be 10am until 11am with memorial service to follow at Griffith’s Chapel.  Interment will be at Lawn Croft Cemetery, Linwood, PA, following the service.
