John Bort, age 88, a longtime resident of Norwood, passed away on October 20, 2023.
John was a resident of Norwood since 1939. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 1, 1935, the son of Fred C. Bort, Sr. and Myrtle C. Bort. John was a graduate of Glen-Nor High School, Class of 1952.
He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Army with the rank of Sergeant.
John was retired from the Boeing Helicopter plant. He was very active in community affairs, having volunteered with the Norwood Fire Company, Fire Police for ten years; the Norwood Ambulance Corps for ten years; and the Tyler Arboretum.
He was very active in his church; having been a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Glenolden where he served as an Elder and was Church Secretary and Church Treasurer.
John was actively involved in Boy Scouts and Sea Scouts. He was a volunteer with the Norwood Sea Scout Ship for 44 years and was Skipper of the Ship for 21 years. He did have a USCG Pilot’s License. He was involved with Boy Scouts for many years and was holder of the B.S.A. Silver Beaver and holder of the Commander Thomas Keane Award.
John was predeceased by his parents,his sister Clara Bort, his brother Fred Bort, Jr., and his nephew David Bort.
He is survived by his nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to John’s Memorial Service on Monday November 6th at 6 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Glenolden, 2 Chester Pike, in Glenolden, Pa 19036. There will be a visitation on Monday November 6th from 5 PM to 6 PM at the church. There will be a spaghetti and meatball dinner in John’s honor at the church immediately following the service.
