Obituary

George Allen Irvin, age 91, passed peacefully on January 28, 2023 in his tranquil home by the sea in Cape May, NJ.

Born November 10, 1931 in Philadelphia, PA, to Harold and Gertrude (nee Hamacher) Irvin.

An adventurer from a young age, George traveled the buses and trolleys of the city to theaters and ballparks following his love of both. This spirit continued by enlisting in the US Navy at age 18.

Sailing on the USS Newport News, George served four tours in the Mediterranean during the Korean War, where he earned the rank of second class radar man.  During his time in radar he mentored and trained other young sailors which led him to West Chester State Teacher’s College and his teaching career at Springfield High School, Delaware County, PA.  There he taught mathematics, and coached track and soccer for 35 years.  

George was an avid sports fan, especially of the Phillies, followed politics passionately, loved music and adored the shore life which led him to retire to Cape May, NJ with his loving wife, Isabel.

George preceded in death by Isabel (nee Nelson), his devoted wife of 60 years, was Dad to dear daughters Joyce Covert, Gail Miller and Grace Ferrell (Fran).  Pop-Pop to loving grandchildren Jenna, Meridith, Abigail, Ivy, Debbie, Fran, Tim, Shane and preceded by Ryan; great-grandsons Caleb, Ethan, Finnegan and Everett and uncle and great uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made in George’s memory to Holy Redeemer Health Hospice, Cape May County, NJ or Department of Disabled Veterans, Cape May County, NJ.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS ARE INVITED TO PAY THEIR RESPECTS ON SATURDAY, APRIL 8TH, 2023 FROM 9AM UNTIL 11AM AT GRIFFITH FUNERAL CHAPEL, 520 CHESTER PIKE, NORWOOD, PA 19074. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO WEAR YOUR PHILLIES ATTIRE.

Interment with Military honors will follow at 12:15PM at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 3301 West Cheltenham Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19150

George will long be remembered as a good and decent man.
